Your Girlfriends Only Know So Much: A Review

Your Girlfriends Only Know So Much: A Brother's Take on Dating and Mating for Sistas by Finesse Mitchell
I admit it: I was pretty cynical when I started reading this book. I really didn't think it could teach me anything I didn't already know about men. I have 5 brothers, and I was raised by a single father...shit, I could probably write my own book. But I was wrong (mark this date down, cos y'all know I'm rarely ever wrong. LOL). Sure, there were a lot of things in the book that I'd talked about on my blog, like: breakfast being the best date, why a woman shouldn't sleep with a man then complain that he took advantage, givin' it up on the first date, and dating crazy people. And there were things that were pretty intuitive but which women never seem to get, like: you can't change a man, when he's interested you'll know, he'll treat you the way you treat yourself (or how you think you deserve to be treated), yadda, yadda, yadda... But there were a few surprises:
- Creating lists: I've never been a fan of lists. I feel like when you make a list of what you're looking for, it prevents you from meeting a great person who doesn't really meet all the criteria on your list. But Finesse actually gave me a different perspective: creating a list can also narrow your focus and help you to look for substance, rather than superficial. Deep, huh? And there's something about the 80/20 Rule in there too.
- Best times to have a discussion with a dude. One of them is after he's finished eating. With my dad, it's after he's finished drinking, but potatoes, potahtoes. LMAO.
- When to stick it out and when to leave. I should have read that a few years ago. LOL.
- Why dudes use pickup lines. The reason actually makes sense.
- Finesse's Call-back Rule. How many times should you call back after a dude doesn't return your call? Let's just say it's more lenient than Simplenigma's Call-ball Rule.
- White women. Yup, they're in there too.
And before anyone asks, yes, I'm still working on my book...

I'm definitely linking your blog!
Why do they use pickup lines? Don't leave us hanging!
Damn, he beat me to it! Should've seen it coming with all those Essence articles. And don't give it all away, let's let the man sell some books.

Hey Sindu!
@Anonymous: As a writer, I can't divulge all the secrets of the book...you'll have to read it. You can get it in the library, y'know. That's where I got my copy.
@Say Yeah: LOL. You can still write your book. There'll always be a market for it.
@Pepper: you did the right thing, I think...what is "fi yuh cyah be un-fi yuh".
I have been wanting to pick up a copy of this book. Nice Review.
Chances are, it won't be available in a book store in Ja. for a while. sighs'
I remember him from SNL. I most definitely might check this one out. I automatically wrote it off as a wise cracking kinda book.
